High Protein Vegetarian Diet – Eat These 5 Foods

In today’s McWorld, we often equate protein with a greasy, drippy burger. Protein is, in fact, a matter of amino acids, and it abounds in the plant kingdom. The trick is in knowing where to find it, knowledge that is especially needed be vegans and vegetarians.

RDA recommendations for protein are from 0.36 to 0.45 grams per pound of body weight a day. That’s only 15 to 20% of calories—an amount easily attainable when including these foods for a high protein vegetarian diet.

High Protein Vegetarian Diet –

1. Dairy Products and Eggs

We’ll get the vegan-unfriendly source out of the way first.  The average egg contains 6 grams of protein and 5 grams of unsaturated (good) fat and only 1.5 grams of the bad kind.

Try to buy organic and local to ensure that your eggs come from healthy, happy chickens.  (Unhealthy and unhappy chickens produce eggs with lower nutrient content!)

Greek yogurt is lower in sugar and has more good fats than do most conventional yogurts which are loaded with sugar, additives, and hormones from cows. Look for varieties with live active cultures; they contain good bacteria to regulate your digestion.

Whey—a milk byproduct—is easily absorbed by the body and packs the proverbial punch with up to 25 grams of protein per scoop – making it great to include for a high protein vegetarian diet. Try the unflavored variety to avoid additives and throw in your own organic fruits or cocoa powder.

2. Tempeh and Tofu

There’s been much talk lately of soy mimicking estrogen and leading to higher risk of cancers, but not enough research has been conducted. To play it safe, avoid processed soy and go for fermented types, like tempeh.  Tempeh even has more protein than tofu—30 grams versus 22 grams per cup, respectively.

Soy- and tofu-based mock-meats are often filled with starchy, unhealthy, and unnatural additives you’re better off without.

3. Quinoa

While often mistaken for a grain (it’s actually a seed), quinoa boasts 9 grams of protein per cup.  For those of us with gluten concerns, quinoa is low on the glycemic index and is a rich source for both soluble and insoluble fiber.  You’ll also get a good dose of vitamin B6, zinc, magnesium, and folate.

4. Vegetables and Legumes

Surprised?  Even the humble broccoli (1 cup) has 5 grams of protein, as does 2 cups of kale and 1 cup of cooked sweet potato.  A single avocado has 10 grams of protein!

If you’re not too worried about carbohydrates, 1 cup of lentils, refried beans, and garbonzo beans have 18, 15.5, and 14.5 grams of protein respectively.

High Protein Vegetarian Diet

5. Nuts and Seeds

Nuts are great for helping to make up a high protein vegetarian diet. Here’s a quick run-down of the protein content of popular nuts and seeds:

• 1 oz. cashews – 4.4 grams of protein

• 1 oz. sesame seeds – 6.5 grams

• 2 oz. walnuts – 5 grams

• 1 oz. pistachios – 5.8 grams

• 2 tbsp almonds – 4 grams

Remember that nut butters—almond, peanut, cashew—are good sources of protein, too.  Just be sure they’re not laden with sugars and additives!

Bayer and Monsanto Push Seeds, Chemicals, and Disinformation

More than a year has passed since Bayer announced a Monsanto takeover that would give the German company control over roughly one-quarter of the world’s seeds and pesticides.

Concerned observers understand that a Bayer-Monsanto mega corporation spells trouble for farmers, consumers, and the environment. But in Big Ag’s alternate reality, the merger is in the public’s interest.

“We can bring better solutions, faster to the growers so they can help contribute to feeding an ever growing world. That’s what this is all about,” Bayer CEO Werner Baumann told CNBC when the merger was announced last September.

Monsanto CEO Hugh Grant said that combining his company’s biotechnology and data science assets with Bayer’s chemistry offerings will “unlock future innovation growers desperately need at the moment. Agriculture needs some of these new products. Farmers are starving for innovation.”

The Bayer-Monsanto plan for farmers might look something like this: growers purchase GMO seeds (such as Roundup Ready crops), herbicides, and pesticides from the company, which uses its technology platforms to collect and analyze data on soil, weather, and plant health. Based on this data, the company then offers products and services that (theoretically) improve crop yields.

In short, Bayer-Monsanto would be positioned to loop farmers into a system of corporate control that furthers their reliance on industrial agriculture practices. And this is supposed to be good for farmers.

But it’s not hard to see that the corporatization of our food supply is mainly good for the bottom line of companies like Bayer and Monsanto.

Big Ag has been using the same arguments for decades to justify a food system dominated by monocultures and heavy chemical use. The difference is that we now know better and are demanding healthier, more diverse, and more sustainable food.

Here is a look at research which undermines the claims being pushed by “Bayersanto” to justify agribusiness as usual.

Claim: Increased Food Production Needed to Feed the Planet

The global population is expected to grow from 7.5 billion people in 2017 to 10 billion by 2050. Big Ag uses this growth projection as an argument for increased food production. And it’s no coincidence that Big Ag has the “solutions” to boost crop yields.

But scientists estimate that farmers already grow enough food to feed 10 billion people. The authors of a 2012 study argue that the root cause of hunger is poverty and inequality—not scarcity. The world’s poorest people, who make less than $2 per day, cannot afford to buy food.

The authors suggest that grain crops that go towards bio fuels and animal feedlots could instead be used to feed the planet’s nearly one billion hungry people.

The United Nations estimates there were 815 million undernourished people in 2016, up from 777 million in 2015, despite there being more than enough food produced in the world to feed everyone.

The UN the current agricultural model, with its emphasis on a narrow range of crops and its heavy use of chemicals, unsustainable due to the environmental damages it causes, including land degradation, deforestation, over-extraction of groundwater, greenhouse gas emissions, loss of biodiversity, and water pollution.

Claim: Organic Farming Cannot Feed the World

Engrained in the food shortage myth is a second myth: organic farming cannot produce enough food to feed the world.

A growing body of research, however, shows that organic farming methods could yield enough food on a global per capita basis to sustain the current human population, and perhaps an even larger population.

Furthermore, a study published in the journal Nature Plants concludes that organic farming delivers food that is more nutritious, more environmentally friendly, and contains less (or no) pesticide residues compared with conventional farming.

New research presented to the UN Human Rights Council denounces as a “myth” the idea that pesticides are necessary to feed the world.

The report states that, “Despite the harms associated with excessive and unsafe pesticide practices, it is commonly argued that intensive industrial agriculture is necessary to increase yields to feed a growing world population.”

The report blames the billion-dollar pesticide industry for “systematic denial of harms” regarding pesticides and “unethical marketing tactics.”

Another new study published in the journal Nature Plants concludes that almost all farms could slash pesticide use without reducing food production.

The farmers studied maintained yields while reducing chemicals using methods such as crop rotation, mechanical weeding, and pest-resistant plant varieties.

Claim: GMO Crops Boost Yields and Reduce Pesticide Use

From their inception, genetically modified crops have been marketed as indispensable to feeding the world’s growing population. We were also told that GMO crops could reduce pesticide use. But more than two decades into the GMO experiment, both of these claims are on shaky ground.

Because the United States and Canada embraced GMOs—but Europe did not—it is instructive to compare crop productivity and pesticide usage in the two regions.

An analysis by The New York Times using U.N. data finds that the U.S. and Canada have not realized discernible yield gains compared to Western Europe.

Meanwhile, herbicide use has increased in the U.S. by 21 percent over this period, but Europe’s largest producer, France, has reduced its herbicide use by 36 percent.

In addition, a report from the National Academy of Sciences found “little evidence” that the introduction of GMO crops resulted in more rapid yearly increases in U.S. crop yields compared to the yield increases seen in the pre-GMO period.

Claim: Pesticide Use on an Industrial Scale is Safe

The idea that using pesticides at industrial scales is environmentally benign is more of an assumption than an outright claim. But this assumption is central to the way that pesticides are applied: without any limits or formal monitoring of their effects on the environment.

Exposure to chemicals in agriculture, in other words, is an ongoing experiment, and we are the guinea pigs.

The authors of a new paper published in the journal Science contrast the way that pharmaceutical and pesticide safety is monitored.

Pharmaceuticals undergo rigorous post-approval monitoring for adverse effects, while pesticides are approved on the basis of limited laboratory tests and field trials, and then used at industrial scales with no further monitoring.

“The effects of dosing whole landscapes with chemicals have been largely ignored by regulators,” the scientists said. “This can and should be changed.”

Monsanto’s Roundup (glyphosate) is the most-used agricultural chemical of all time, but evidence is emerging that glyphosate—originally patented to clean pipes—is a human carcinogen.

A leading FDA-registered food safety testing laboratory has found extremely high glyphosate levels in some of America’s most iconic food brands, including Cheerios, Annie’s, Kashi, Ritz, Oreo, and Lay’s.

Importantly, even foods not made with GMO ingredients were found to have high glyphosate levels.

These findings are just a small sample of the evidence against large-scale industrial farming.

Bayer and Monsanto want us to believe their joining together is in our best interest, but anyone who learns the facts can see that a merger between the two would only lead to more of the same practices at a time when people are hungry for change.

‘More Data, More Profit’: Google tracks your location even when you ask it not to, says report.

If you’ve ever felt that Google was watching your every move even when you told it not to, a new investigation has just vindicated your suspicions.

The Associated Press conducted an investigation and found that Google stores Android and iPhone users’ location data even when they have chosen privacy settings to prevent the company from doing so.

Their findings were confirmed by computer-science researchers at Princeton University.

RT reports: Google claims that if you turn off the ‘Location History’ setting on your device, the company will not be able to store information about where you have been. The company states on its support page, that you can turn off Location History “at any time” and that, with the setting turned off, “the places you go are no longer stored.”

But that’s not true, the AP report says, because some Google apps continue to store time-stamped location data even when the ‘Location History’ setting is switched off – without asking for permission.

Some of the examples given by the AP include the Google Maps app, which takes a snapshot of your location as soon as you open it and even completely unrelated searches like “chocolate chip cookies” which “pinpoint your precise latitude and longitude” and save it to your Google account.

The AP looked into the issue after K. Shankari, a graduate researcher at UC Berkeley, blogged about how her Android device had prompted her to rate a recent shopping trip to Kohl’s even though her location history had been turned off.

Jonathan Mayer, a Princeton computer scientist, told the AP that Google’s privacy settings should be made clearer. “If you’re going to allow users to turn off something called ‘Location History,’ then all the places where you maintain location history should be turned off,” he said. “That seems like a pretty straightforward position to have.”

Google, however, says it has been clear. A spokesperson for the company said that it provides “clear descriptions” of all the Google tools that people use which may record users’ locations.

To prevent Google from saving location data from all of those tools, the company said users can turn off a setting called ‘Web and App Activity’ – but since this setting is turned on by default, many people don’t know about it and assume that when they turn ‘Location History’ off, it will be off across all of their apps.

Users can delete stored location markers by hand, but each one has to be selected and deleted individually – unless you want to delete all of your stored activity – making it a time-consuming process.

Google does offer a less misleading description of how its location storing works but only in a popup window if you select to ‘pause’ ‘Location History’ on your Google account web page, where it states that some location data may still be saved as part of your activity on other Google apps.

Peter Lenz, a senior geospatial analyst at advertising technology company Dstillery said that Google’s obsession with tracking user locations is all to do with advertising revenue. “They build advertising information out of data,” he said. “More data for them presumably means more profit.”

The AP’s findings were confirmed by computer-science researchers at Princeton University.

Cannabis Sativa is a natural herb that has its origins in Central Asia. Commonly known as “Cannabis” or “Marijuana”, it has been used by traditional cultures for many thousands of years to treat health conditions.

Cannabis products are derived from the parts of the cannabis sativa plant that contain high levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – the cannabinoid most commonly known for its psychoactive properties.

This is why many countries strictly regulate it. Cannabis products are often shrouded in controversy and heavily regulated in many countries around the world.

Over the past few decades, there has been efforts to legalize cannabis products and their induction into modern medicine. This herb can provide many health benefits and treat common ills.

So what benefits can this ancient herb provide and how might it be used to treat common ailments in the 21st century?

Here they are:

1. Stress & Anxiety

Stress is a common issue in modern society as we expose ourselves to more stressful situations. Unlike us, our ancestors faced stress through short experiences like when in danger, or excited, like when hunting or running from predators.

Through many lifestyle factors and dietary factors, our stress levels are greatly impacted. Many prescription medicines used for anxiety and chronic stress is harmful to our bodies, while natural alternatives are weak. Then, comes in cannabis oil (CBD Oil).

In 2013, a study was published that discovered treatment involving the use of cannabinoids after a traumatic/stressful experience could potentially help to stabilize the emotional response from the subject. Researchers are now finding that cannabinoids are able to slow down stress receptors in the hippo-campus (part of the brain where emotional response is controlled).

2. Asthma

Cannabis has been utilized as a treatment for respiratory illnesses in many ancient Indian and Chinese cultures. With its analgesic effects and anti-inflammatory properties, including the ability to dilate the bronchial tubes, providing a better flow of oxygen.

For millions who suffer from asthma, cannabis oil could be a potent solution to their condition. Many studies were conducted in the 1970s that looked into the bronchodilatory impacts of cannabis on asthma patients. Many asthma patients in the study had benefited positively from the treatment.

3. Heart Health

There are antioxidant properties found within cannabis oil that could treat heart-related issues. Studies on animals have found that cannabis oil treatments are powerful the prevention against some cardiovascular issues, including strokes, atherosclerosis, and heart attacks.

In 2014, a team of British researchers discovered that the results from animal studies had applied to human heart conditions as well. It was recognized that cannabinoids have the ability to relax and dilate blood vessels so circulation can be improved and blood pressure is lowered.

4. Pain Relief

Traditional uses of cannabis was geared towards healing chronic pain. This dates back to thousands of years ago. Now, we have evidence that proves cannabis products are effective in healing discomfort by preventing neural transmissions in the body’s pain pathways. They also have the ability to reduce inflammation, which explains why cancer patients take them while going through sessions of chemotherapy.

In 2010, A study in Canada found that cannabis is an effective treatment towards chronic pain. 23 adult participants, who suffered from neuropathic pain from trauma or surgery, were in the study.

Over the span of 2 weeks, the participants were randomly selected and administered cannabis in 4 various potency levels. Results observed that when participants took it 3 times a day, cannabis was effective in reducing chronic, severe pain, as well as stabilizing sleeping patterns.

5. Skin Protection

You can actually apply cannabis oil on your skin to give it a more healthier glow. The oil can exfoliate the old cells and stimulate the growth of new skin cells to replace them. It also aids in lipid production, which works to fight off acne and psoriasis.

Besides being able to eliminate stress, cannabis oil can also prevent skin diseases that are stimulated by anxiety like rosacea or eczema.

6. Seizures

Evidence from small studies and personal reports state that cannabis oil is powerful in seizure prevention and could end up being a form of treatment towards epilepsy in the future. Not enough evidence is out there to make it worthy of selling for commercial use for the illnesses.

Many published studies aren’t able to even reach a conclusion that is purely decisive.

7. Cancer

Cancer is the most dreaded disease and most controversial in history. There is a lot of enthusiasm with cannabis oil now that people are seeing its effects through personal stories etc.

Scientists are finding that some cannabinoids have many positive effects in lab conditions like:

• Preventing new blood vessels from becoming tumors
• Reducing the risk of cancer cells spreading through the body and penetrating healthy neighboring tissue.
• Triggering the death of cancer cells through apoptosis
• Preventing the division of cancer cells

Despite strong evidence pointing to cannabis being a superheater, it still has yet to be recognized as a cure.
